Texas State University, in partnership with the University Police Department, Bonnie and Rodney Salyer, and the non-profit organization Leave No Victim Behind, is officially opening applications for the Annual Austin Salyer Community Service Award.
UPD Announces Call for Applications
Established in 2023, this prestigious honor recognizes a Texas State student who embodies the selflessness, patriotism, and dedication to others that defined the life of Austin Salyer. The recipient of this year’s award will receive a $1,000.00 cash scholarship to support their continued education and service efforts.
Honoring a Legacy of Service
Austin Salyer was a vibrant junior at Texas State, a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi-Theta Iota chapter, and a dedicated cadet in the Army ROTC program. With dreams of commissioning as a U.S. Army officer and eventually serving in a SWAT unit, Austin’s life was defined by a profound desire to protect and serve his country and community.
Tragically, Austin’s life was cut short by a negligent discharge of a firearm in a neighboring apartment. To ensure his spirit of service lives on, his parents; esteemed TXST alumni Bonnie and Rodney Salyer; collaborated with the university to create an award that rewards those who step up for others.
A Growing Tradition
The inaugural award was presented to the Salyers themselves in 2023 for their tireless advocacy through Leave No Victim Behind. In 2024, the tradition transitioned to the student body, honoring the first Texas State student dedicated to community impact. As the university looks for its next recipient, the committee is searching for a Bobcat who leads with the same "infectious zest for life" and gentle spirit that Austin was known for.
